The historic town of Daraga in Albay once again set to hold its month-long Cagsawa Festival to mark the 200th anniversary of the February 1814 cataclysmic Mayon Volcano eruption that buried underground an entire community and its imposing baroque church built by Franciscan priests in 1724, leaving above ground only its belfry.
The Cagsawa Festival aims to celebrate the indomitable spirit and resilience of Albayanos, and not the memory of the disaster’s horrors and It will also offer tourists something more deeply cultural and meaningful than just walking around and taking souvenir shots, and watching the world famous scenery many see only on postcards.
The festival will kick off this February 2014 and It will showcase sports and cultural events, including a traditional healers or ‘herbolarios’ convention, cross-country bike race and trail run. It will also feature on the spot “pamaypay” (hand fan) and other handicrafts making contests, handicrafts being one of Daraga town’s main products, and a once in a lifetime journey into the culinary world of the famous hot chili, known locally as ‘Lada’, the journey goes beyond the limits of the traditional ‘Bicol Express’ cuisine. All these events are expected to further rev up the spirited tourism drive of the province of Albay.
