Iloilo City
Iloilo City is a highly urbanized city in the Philippines and the capital city of Iloilo province. It is the political center of the Western Visayas region, as well as the center of the Iloilo-Guimaras Metropolitan Area.
The history of Iloilo City dates back to the Spanish colonial period, starting out as a small and incoherent grouping of fishermen's hamlets from the Iloilo River by a large swamp which after 1855 became the "Queen City of the South", and later given the honorific title of "La Muy Noble Ciudad" (English: The Most Noble City) by the Queen Regent of Spain. At the turn of the twentieth century, Iloilo City was second to the primate city of Manila, with stores along Calle Real selling luxury products from all over the world, an agricultural experimental station established at La Paz in 1888, a school of Arts and Trades which opened in 1891, and a telephone network system operating in 1894.
Smith, Bell & Co.: House of trade, history and poetry
A century-old, Spanish-style house of stone and capiz shell windows in Tabaco City in Albay looks as illustrious as its former occupant, Angela Manalang-Gloria, regarded as the “matriarch” of Filipino women poets in English.
It was doubly significant, therefore, when the National Historical Institute unveiled two markers at the Manalang-Gloria ancestral home near the city’s international port.
Sitting on a 3,700-square-meter property, the house was built in the early 1900s by a wealthy Bicolano, Don Mariano Villanueva. It was considered one of the most beautiful houses of its kind in the country.
Potenciano Gregorio Monument in Sto. Domingo, Albay
Potenciano Gregorio, often referred to as Potenciano Gregorio, Sr. was a Bicolano musician. He was the composer of Sarung Banggi (One Evening), the most famous song in the Bikol language.
Potenciano Gregorio was born in what was then known as the town of Lib-og (now Santo Domingo) in the province of Albay in the Philippines. His parents were Narciso Gregorio and Canuta Valladolid (some sources spell his mother's name as Balladolid). At an early age he learned to play the violin and was soon recognized for his talent. He subsequently learned to play other instruments such as the bandurria, the guitar, and piano. Later he started writing music for the local church by himself or in collaboration with his older brother Bernardo who organized the local band Banda de Lib-og. Potenciano later became the bandmaster of the same band until he joined the Philippine Constabulary Band in 1919.
Malilipot Municipal Hall
Malilipot is a 4th class municipality in the province of Albay, Philippines.
Malilipot traces its history to the expedition of Captain Juan de Salcedo in 1573 and the colonization of Albay Bay, now called Albay, with 120 soldiers and guides. During these period, towns were established. Libon was founded in 1573, Polangui in 1589, Oas in 1587, and Malinao in 1600. Other municipalities were established in succession. A story alleged that the Spanish colonizers reached this new settlement in the month of December. The weather was so cold that the Spaniards exclaimed "muy frio" which the natives interpreted as "Malilipot" meaning very cold. Another legendary name given to the town was "Manlipod" meaning "Protector" attributed to the mountain ranges which had protected the town from the early destructive eruptions of Mayon Volcano. It was said that, had it not been for these mountain ranges, the poblacion would have been buried under the molten lava and ashes emitted by Mt. Mayon. These protective mountains are Toktokan and Bulakawan situated on the southern part and extends to the western side of the town, and screens it from the ravages of Mayon Volcano. The town is popularly called Manlipod and Malilipot. However, the present official name is Malilipot (Ma-li-li-pot), accented on the third syllable.
